What can I recommend for the improvement of the Fieldtrip and Seminar Program?

To make the fieldtrip better I think we needed more time to prepare. Maybe if we had more time we might have been in to companies where their core business is IT related or the companies we’ve been might have been more prepared and presented someone who is IT knowledgeable. But with regards to the travel agency I have no problem. The travel agency we had did their job nicely and the fieldtrip was a success. But maybe next time the whole 4 days can be allocated for business and technical visits and the last day can be a bonus for the students where the whole day is allocated for having fun and going to very memorable places.
Also about the grouping. Most of the students complained that it no fun when you’re not around your friends at times like this. Maybe it would have been better if the groupings were by section so that those who know each other are on the same group and bus.
And I think that’s all there is to it.
Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad Shocked Arrow

My advice to those who will take their Fieldtrip and Seminar program in the near future.

My advice to those who are going to take the fieldtrip next year is to prepare early and plan well. So they won’t experience what happened to us. Where there are two students who failed to pay the necessary amount and we had to let them borrow money so that we can pursue with the fieldtrip. Also I would like to tell them that if they are going to Manila they should tell their parents as soon as possible. Because the expenses are very high and it’s always better to plan ahead.
And I suggest they schedule the fieldtrip sometime after the finals so that no projects and requirements are delayed and no subject schedule will be sacrificed and things like that. Because what happened to us is we crammed to finish our pending subjects and had a series of makeup classes to cover for the time allocated for the fieldtrip. It’s annoying because now we don’t have a sem-break.
That’s all. I just don’t want them to experience what we have. Good luck and God bless them.

fieldtrip overview

The fieldtrip was a five day company tour in Manila. We were divided into 4 buses for the first and last day and 3 buses for the 2nd to the 4th day. Different buses go on different companies but the travel agency made sure that all the students have equal experiences with regards to technical visits. Also scheduled with our trip to manila was our national seminar which was held on UP diliman Campus. The first day only had a single company visit because it was already noon when we arrived in manila. The succeeding days had at least 2 company visits and some sightseeing.

Day 1.

We travelled for manila and then headed to our lunch destination after the plane landed. We visited the ByanTel then and learned about their Networking. It was just a short discussion though. After that we had our daily fun run and it was on MOA for today. We spent the rest of the afternoon there and also had our dinner at a restaurant nearby. And it was resting time after.

Day2.

Woke up early and prepared for the departure for the national seminar venue at UP Diliman. We had our breakfast at Grills and Sizzles located on Examiner Street. We headed to UP after that. In UP we had our national seminar at UP ITTC with guest speakers to talk about different things related to IT and CS. The first speaker talked about effective thesis writing. A topic our facilitator personally requested because we needed it. The speaker told us that when working with a thesis it is important to manage your time and if you lose your interest in what you are doing then do something else that would get you back working after. It was full of knowledge and very informative. The second speaker talked about data visualization. A very interesting topic for me, but that the speaker failed to get the students attention because the example used at the presentation of the topic. We could not relate with the example that he has chosen that was why we lost our interest to listen. Then the third speaker started his speech. He started it with an introduction of showing us their educational offers and other stuffs like that. After that he proceeded with his topic. After the third speaker the next speaker woke everyone up. She talked about multimedia and showed some of her works. She also shared what the requirements are to be in her spot. Then the last speaker for the day started his speech. He was a foreigner teaching in Up. He is a game developer and that was his topic he shared with us how to get into that career, what are the skills needed and how to actually get there.
After our seminar we had our luch and headed straight to UP ayala TECHNO HUB. There we visited Seachange who showed and endorsed us VOD or video on demand and IBM who offer free servers for use and is leading in the world of innovation. That is what we did on our second day.

Day3.

We went to ASTI and watched their developers as they presented their projects like the bayanihan linux OS, the multi tester, the GSM device for PC and other projects. After their presentation we had our lunch and headed for the Social Security System head quarters in East Avenue, Quezon City. There we learned how SSS works and their benefits. Also their networking and data security representative gave us some info on how and when they started to automate their services. He also told us about their server and the backup server located outside the city. After the seminar and discussions we then toured their facilities. After touring the technical visit for the day was over and it was now time for having fun and it was on Tutuban mall and dinner was on us. We did some window shopping and some walking and got tired and went back to the hotel and rested.

Day 4.

Day 4 have a single company visit scheduled and it was on hitachi GST where terabyte hardisk drives are born. As usual it was breakfast and then travel. As we arrive to hitachi GST we were given a clothe to cover our shoes and then started the tour on their museum type room where their history is written. After that very short tour we were then made watch a video about their history and the development of terabyte hardisk drives. After the film showing we then toured the facility where we watched all the processes a wafer goes through before it becomes a data writer. After the tour we headed for our lunch venue which was on max’s restaurant in Tagaytay where the Taal volcano was our background as we eat. It was an amazing view seeing the top of the volcano. after our lunch we travelled to people’s park in the sky to buy some souvenir items and more sightseeing. Arriving at the park we feasted our eyes with the views and the variety of available souvenirs in store. But it was all in a rush because the best part is yet to come. After the short shopping spree and sightseeing we then headed to the most awaited part of the fieldtrip the enchanted kingdom ride all you can adventure. And there I have experienced the best ride of my life the roller coaster of the enchanted kingdom was the best. But unfortunately it was the only ride we got on to because of the time. But it was all worth it. It was so tiring that we got back to the hotel and rested.

Day 5.

Last day of the fieldtrip and we checked out of the hotel early and travelled to our first technical visit which was on TTI and there we listened to a lecture about telecommunication and how it works, the use of routers and repeaters and some other topics about telecommunication. Also we toured their facilities and saw what repeaters look like. After that discussion we then climbed to the second floor and saw a wireless antennae used for acquiring wireless internet connection. Then the speaker explained how it works. Then we went to their roof top to see a satellite dish and learn how it works and after that discussion about the satellite dish and how it catches signals it ended our TTI tour. It was no lunch time and time to travel to the lunch venue. After a quick lunch we then headed to the MMDA headquarters to see their facilities. There we were shown the MMDA’s server which was still DOS based and very outdated but the presenter said that they are just waiting for a decision from the upper management to upgrade their system. After that very short tour we went to their monitoring department that has a lot of monitors showing different parts of the Manila roads and highways. What we were seeing was live feed from their cameras installed all over Manila. While there their representative explained to us what they are doing there and what they usually do. After the discussion they made us watch some accident file videos and most of them are caused by motorcycle or reckless driving. That was the last technical visit scheduled for our fieldtrip. After that we then travelled to SM and spent the rest of our time there before our flight back to Davao. When it was time to go we then travelled to NAIA to wait for our flight back to Davao and it was the end of our fieldtrip.

That is what happened during our 5 days fieldtrip to Manila.

Day5 fieldtrip

Today, I went on a company visit to Telecoms Training Institute (TTI) and MMDA.
What I learned?

Telecoms Training Institute (TTI)

I learned or rather heard about repeaters and their functions and purposes. Different kinds of connections such as wired and wireless. Two types of repeaters. How much their tools cost and other things about telecommunication connections and networking.

MMDA

They are still using DOS based software for their traffic light controls and traffic monitoring system. Also the technologies they are using are both foreign. They also want to upgrade their server to a window based server but they are still waiting for the higher management’s decision.

80% of traffic accidents involve motorcycles and more than 10% of this is the motorcycle is at fault.

What I liked?

I liked how the presenter in TTI showcased the equipments while talking about how they work. It was as if we were his students. And also in MMDA I liked how the presenter presented their server and how he entertained our questions. also i liked how the MMDA shared some of their documented videos with us. especially the video where the roads were being flooded by bagyong Ondoy.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t like the rooms in TTI they have no air-conditioning unit. It was so hot.

Day4 fieldtrip

Today, I went on a company visit to HITACHI GST.
What I learned?

There is 3 type of hard disk drive categorized by sizes which are the 3.5, the 2.5 and the 1.8.
3.5 are usually used in our desktops while the 2.5 and 1.8 are usually the data storage used for mobile gadgets.
For 3.5 hard disks their largest data storage capacity reaches over 20 terabyte. Over 300Gigabyte memory storage for 2.5 type of hard disk drives. And about 80Gigabyte for 1.8 type of hard disk drives.
They also showed us the process of producing data writers.

What I liked?

It was very interesting. Especially because we are IT students and we use computer that has a hard disk drive inside. It was just good to know how they are being made. How data is being stored inside the hard disk. And how they managed to expand the storage capability of the hard disks they have developed.
They made us wear their uniform jacket. It made me feel more welcomed.

What I didn’t like?

It was so boring how they made us wait in a room for our turn for the facility tour. They made us watch a video that was played twice in a row.

Day3 fieldtrip

Today, I went on a company visit to Advance Science and Technical Institute (ASTI) and SSS.
What I learned?
ASTI

ASTI have a lot of projects these are the ones presented to us.
They were the ones that developed the open source operating system Linux Bayanihan.
GSM Data Terminal. This product enables computers to send and receive text messages, just like an ordinary cellular phone. It uses any mobile phone SIM card, and there is no need for Internet connection.

SSS

They have 2 servers running. One act as their main server located within Manila and the other act as a backup server located outside Manila.

Also SSS offers assistance to almost all misfortunes a member experience. And they have a very strict and secured ID system that is why it was proposed that SSS ids should be universal.
They have an amazing system for capturing multiple registration from a single person.

What I liked?

ASTI

They were very kind when giving us information and presenting their projects.
They were very innovative. And they entertained our questions very well. They enlightened our ignorant minds.

SSS

First of all they gave us foods. Next is they have the warmest welcome in all of the companies we’ve been. Also they gave us a speaker who is very well educated in information technology. He managed to answer all of our questions and satisfied our hunger for information.

What I didn’t like?

Swlike in the 2nd day, I don’t find anything to unlike.

Day2 fieldtrip

Today, I went on a company visit to Seachange and IBM.

What I learned?

IBM

I learned that IBM now is selling 5 different types of software 2 of which is being developed internally and the rest are being outsourced. These softwares are:
  • • DB2 and Information Management: Information on demand
    • Lotus: Communication, collaboration, and productivity
    • Tivoli: IT service management
    • Rational: Business-driven development
    • WebSphere: Business process management

Also IBM have two servers running open for any advocates to use.

Seachange

I learned about their product software Video on demand or VOD. It is made up of two components which are the Axiom on demand and the Media cluster.
Axiom on demand is a content delivery platform that is used for faster video buffering.
Media cluster is their media server.

What I liked?

IBM

They gave me a genuine IBM bag.
They offer free server services without any charges.
They treated us very nicely.
They gave us a lot of information and was warm in welcoming us.

Seachange

They have a very nice crew that entertained us as we toured their facility. They were funny. They were less formal than the other companies we have visited. One of their workers was actually just wearing shorts while working. It was nice to see that there are actually companies that don’t give much care of what their employees are wearing.
They showed and presented a lot of their projects. They didn’t limit us to just one project but rather showed us almost everything from those being developed until those that are already released.

What I didn’t like?

I was actually contented with everything that there is nothing that I don’t like with both companies.

Day1 fieldtrip

Today, I went on a company visit to BayanTel in Queszon City.

What I learned?

They use different hardware to network their clients and this different hardware requires different NMS or Network Management System.
Their company is concentrated in southern parts of the Philippines such us some parts of Visayas and greater Mindanao.

What I liked?

The venue of the discussion is in a very nice conference room. They showed us their Network Operations Center with working people. The speaker was nice.

What I didn’t like?

The speaker was not very familiar with IT. And the topic was about switching of calls and networking telephone lines. We were not familiar with the topic and it was not that interesting.

TECHNOPRENUER: Assignment 5 (Due: September 17, before 01:00pm)

Given the chance to have your own techno business, discuss it's nature and target clients (3000 words).

Before I start talking about the business that I want, first I want to explain these terminologies to for the sake of discussion. Business is an economic system in which goods and services are exchange for one another or money, on the basis of their supposed worth. Every business requires some form of investment and a sufficient number of customers to whom its output can be sold at profit on a consistent basis. A business is naturally formed to earn profit that will increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operator of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a monetary returns in exchange for work and recognition of risk. This basically means that business is made primarily to increase your own wealth or to gain from others in term of giving them something for something more in return.
The next terminology is Technology. Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, technique, crafts, systems or methods of association. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have narrowed physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies and has allowed the rise of a vacation class. Different implementations of technology manipulate the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the concept of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms. Or in a very brief explanation is the advancement of equipment with the use of knowledge.

Also one of the advancement that technology brought about is the so called social sites or online communities. And massive variety of online games that kids nowadays are so fund of joining and getting addicted into.
Introduction to business idea:
Nowadays there are a thousand of online games that exist. And all of them have a currency of their own. An example is HitGrab’s MouseHUnt with gold as a currency, Level-up-game’s Ragnarok with Zeny, Level-up-game’s FLYFF with Penya. Now, not all players now how to effectively earn money in the game they are in it maybe because the game has low cash drop rate or they just don’t know what to do to earn more. This idea came when my friend told me his gaming story. The story goes like this. He is an addict to the game MouseHunt and he is fund of buying rare items and game credits from anyone who offers just to excel in the game and be the leading player among the others. So I will use that idea and put it in a business. I will be selling game credits and items if available. This means I will be retailing game credits. Retailers and Distributors act as middle-men in getting goods produced by manufacturers to the intended consumer, generating a profit as a result of providing sales or distribution services. Most consumer-oriented stores and catalogue companies are distributors or retailers.
Business details:
This will be Sole proprietorship type of business ownership where the business is owned by one person. The owner may operate on his or her own or may employ others. The owner of the business has personal liability of the debts incurred by the business. But if necessary I’m also willing to change into a different type of ownership.
Also this business will not need a massive amount of money for capital because I myself am an avid fan of online games. So I will be playing and selling whatever I gain in those games. But as I said it’s not easy to gain game credits as a player. So how will the business grow? I have also said earlier that I or the nature of the business is a retailer. This means that I will be buying small amount of credits for a cheaper cost and selling them at a higher price. So I will be doing something that they call buy and sell strategy.
Scope and target clients:
Now to have a good business having a good business idea is not the only requirement. You must also have target client or costumer and they have to be plenty to be ensured that the business will be a success. Because without target clients the business will be nothing more than a gamble without assurance of getting back what you spent. For the business that I have planned my target client will be those people who want to get easy credit for the game that they are playing. In our local place alone there are a very massive amount of people who are into online games. And there are also business minded people who are already doing this kind of business. But they are only offering a single online game credit. As for me I will be offering as much game as I can find and learn tricks or easy money techniques. Also this business will have its own website, because I’m planning to have the biggest game credit selling business not only locally but in the world. So there will be a web-based approach for this business for the people on other countries. Modes of payment will be through the most trusted online banking, PayPal.
The success of this business will be determined by the following factors:
• What game should be supported or offered.
The games that will be offered should be games that have a large community. To be sure that there is someone interested in the game credits. Because if there is a small gaming community there is a little chance that they would be interested in buying game credits. And games with large community often have tournaments that require a lot of game credits for supplies to win. They will be a very good target for business deals. Also in a gaming community with a large population game items are sold at a high cost because there are a lot of possible buyers and that would cause a greater demand for game credits and players will start to search for someone who is willing to sell their game credits for cash and that’s where we come in and take their money. LOL
• Where to buy cheap game credits.
Because not all our game credits and items sold are earned in the game and since this is a retail business the source of product which are the game credits and items should be cheap to the extent that we can gain the highest profit possible. Forums is a good hunting site, because a lot of forum community has people selling their game credits that asks their client to offer for price.
No business will grow without advertisement. But since this is a business at a very low stage, advertisements should be cheap or if possible free. So I’m thinking of advertising at social sites like facebook, friendster, tweeter and other social sites that offer free posts. Also advertising at forum sites is not a bad idea. Since some even actually sell their products at forums without paying for using the site for business purposes. The advantage of advertising your business is that prospect clients can find you and most likely purchase what you’re selling.
• Reputation
Posting proof of successful deals in the site will be a good idea. This will tell the other interested clients that they can trust this little business and will hopefully buy my offers. Building a good reputation is really important, because if you have a good reputation more clients will come to you even if you’re offering them services at a higher price but riskless business deals. This will be the edge against those who just sell on social sites, because most of them don’t get any clients because prospect clients are careful enough to avoid being scammed.
Advantage of business:
• Home based
Since this is an online game credit shop there is no need to rent a place for office or headquarters, home is more than enough to be an office. And for local deals setting up a meeting place to do the exchange or payment is an option, but if possible inviting them to pay at the house is also good. Where after they pay the game credits will be sent to their accounts immediately.
• Bonus Profit from game
As I said earlier I am also an avid fan of online games. The only difference of me from the clients is that I don’t buy game credits. So I will also be playing some of the games and try to earn as much game credits as I can and if lucky I might even find rare items that other players would be willing to buy for cash. That would mean an additional profit without additional capital.
• Less capital
This business doesn’t need much money to start. First is that because no special equipment is needed. The equipments needed are already available, since they are just a PC with a good video capacity and a good internet connection. Second is as I said I’m an online game player so some of the game credits and items for sale will be from luck in playing the game and would only cost me time and electric bill. LOL
Disadvantage:
• Scam
Since we will be buying from cheap suppliers the risk of scam is high. But it’s a matter of being wise enough not to get fooled. But we never really tell. Anyway with luck and good analysis hopefully we don’t get fooled.LOL
• Weak game maintenance
If the games we offer have a bad maintenance chances are it will be out of trend soon. And out stock of game credits and items that are not yet purchased will be a dead investment and will be useless. Hopefully we don’t experience this. And also games with weak maintenance are vulnerable to hackers. Someone might get inside and if not destroy the game that would mean the end of our business, would make their accounts rich enough to be giving away everything for free. That will be very bad for our business.
• Trust issues
Well since we have online services offered the issues regarding trust is important. It was stated above that building a good reputation is a key to the success of this business. And we can’t avoid people who will try to damage our reputation with black propaganda. What their motives will be is none of our concern for now.
So far those are the factors for success, advantages and disadvantages that I can think of. But it is expected that more will be added when the business is launched.

TECHNOPRENUER: Assignment 4 (Due: August 20, before 01:00pm)

What are the lessons that you learned after reading the commencement address of Steve Jobs? (at least 1000words)

People often say that “the best teacher is experience” and “learn from your mistakes”. Well what better way to learn through experience than to listen to expert’s experiences and mistakes committed. Steve Jobs had a very inspiring commencement. I have learned a lot from it. He had three stories that had different lessons in life. These are the different lessons I learned from the three different stories.

The first story was entitled “connecting the dots”. He said that back then he never thought that he was actually making the right decisions in his life. He said that you can’t connect the dots forward only backward. And he was right. He cited that back then he was also afraid of “what might happen in the future”, “What would be the effect of his actions in the future”. But he did what he did and it all ended well. I learned that he was right you don’t know what will happen in the future, you might as well experiment with it. Find what you love, chase it, do it, and don’t regret it. Anyway, whatever comes your way, you can always go on with your life. And who knows you might succeed in life like Steve did. He also said “You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” This was something everyone should try. Even if these things are somewhat uncertain, it is something you can always trust to believe in. Who knows you end up a very successful man like Steve.

The second story is “love and Loss”. Steve knew what he wanted with his life in an early stage (Lucky him). He knew that developing a machine called a computer was the thing he wanted to do for the rest of his life, it was what he loved. And he chased it. Well unlucky me. Up until now I still don’t know what I want to do with my life. I went to college and took IT because I loved working with computers. And I still love it without any regrets. I think I made the right decision. But what to do after it is something I can’t imagine. I still don’t know what career to chase after college. But Steve did. And wasn’t afraid to do it, and dropped out of college (He and his friend Woz). That is why I’m planning t just finish college first then live my life as I should be doing and try to realize what I would really love to do (hopefully I would realize it sometime sooner). That was about love, now for loss. Steve got fired from a company that he started himself. It was not good. But he then realized that rejection is not something that can change your emotion; it was not enough for you to change what you love. So he started another company, met his wife and again succeeded by doing what he loved and risking everything on to something they call faith and destiny. And like what Steve did I will not stop from searching what I love, and when I find it I’ll keep it and I will not stop doing it until I succeed. I will not settle, I will not stop, I will not give up until I find it or until I’m dead.

The last story is “Death” (It sounds scary already). “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” This was a saying that Steve used as an inspiration to keep on doing what he is doing. He said that life is too short to be wasted on things you don’t really like. Don’t be affected with the opinion of the majority, just do what you love and be happy while doing it. Also Steve said “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there.” Which are quite correct, people often hesitate to do something because it differs from everyone else, and tend to just go with the majority. Sometime right is being covered with what is common. You should think and think it through. What do you want to do? After that, whatever the result is do it. As long as it is not illegal and it will not hurt someone else then go for it. Because nothing is more satisfying feeling than succeeding something you actually wanted, wished for, loved.

As his farewell statement Steve borrowed a statement from a publication from his college times. “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” From what I understand “stay hungry” means to starve for more of what you are having. Search for more success, more ambition, more what you really love. “Stay foolish” fools are not afraid to fail, they go for things they love, and they risk everything without thinking of the future too much. That is what being a “fool” means. Well. Why not! I’ll try to do that. I’ll starve for what I love and be fooling when making decisions and see what happens.
Those were the lessons I’ve learned from Steve’s commencement.
“Don’t be afraid to commit mistakes, because mistakes can be corrected, but never do wrong, because wrong can never be right.”

TECHNOPRENUER: Assignment 2 (Due: August 9, before 01:00pm)

I recently took my personality traits test from http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/. And this is the result.

Your Results
Closed-Minded |--0-------------------| Open to New Experiences
Disorganized |-0--------------------| Conscientious
Introverted |----0-----------------| Extraverted
Disagreeable |-----------------0----| Agreeable
Calm / Relaxed |---------------0------| Nervous / High-Strung
What aspects of personality does this tell me about?
There has been much research on how people describe others, and five major dimensions of human personality have been found. They are often referred to as the OCEAN model of personality, because of the acronym from the names of the five dimensions.

Openness to Experience/Intellect
High scorers tend to be original, creative, curious, complex; Low scorers tend to be conventional, down to earth, narrow interests, uncreative.
You are somewhat conventional. (Your percentile: 20)

Conscientiousness
High scorers tend to be reliable, well-organized, self-disciplined, careful; Low scorers tend to be disorganized, undependable, negligent.
You probably have a messy desk! (Your percentile: 5)

Extraversion
High scorers tend to be sociable, friendly, fun loving, talkative; Low scorers tend to be introverted, reserved, inhibited, quiet.
You tend to shy away from social situations. (Your percentile: 22)

Agreeableness
High scorers tend to be good natured, sympathetic, forgiving, courteous; Low scorers tend to be critical, rude, harsh, and callous.
You tend to consider the feelings of others. (Your percentile: 74)

Neuroticism
High scorers tend to be nervous, high-strung, insecure, worrying; Low scorers tend to be calm, relaxed, secure, hardy.
You tend to become anxious or nervous. (Your percentile: 60)

Before reflecting on this result first I would like to explain what personality traits test is. Personality traits test is a test that would determine how you would react on a certain situation. It is different from the common IQ, EQ, and AQ test that have been introduced to us last technopreneur session. This test aims to inform the test taker who he is as an individual and how he acts in front of his friends or complete stranger. This test that I took specifically has 5 different categories of result with the acronym OCEAN. O for Openness to Experience/Intellect, C for Conscientiousness, E for Extraversion, A for agreeableness, and N for Neuroticism. These result tend to explain your characteristic or traits in different category or independently.

My Openness to experience/ Intellect result is “You are somewhat conventional” with 20% average. The test result means that I am conventional type of a person, have a narrow interest and am uncreative, which is something I strongly disagree. Yes I am a conventional type of a person but I am not uncreative and I don’t have a narrow interest. I may not have that much originality in me but I am creative in a way that when a topic or idea is laid, I think of my opinion regarding the topic and compare it with others. And after comparing I will accept the idea that is more correct, meaning I will copy someone else’s idea if it means my original idea is wrong but would reject other ideas if mine is more correct according my own perspectives. I don’t have a narrow interest actually my interest is as wide as it can possibly be, also I’m open-minded to new interests that I allow others to open up on me and I listen carefully.

My Conscientiousness test result is “You probably have a messy desk” with 5% average. This is also something I strongly disagree in. I am not unreliable and I am not negligent. I may not like having a lot of responsibilities but I can be reliable that when a task is given to me I try my best to finish it before the deadline. Especially when the task is given as an individual task where I don’t have to wait for group mates to meet and decide what to do next. I am not negligent. I always think of my responsibilities and plan on how to finish them all even if I know I can’t follow my plans. And I would never do something that would lead to the degradation of my reputation and later on would describe as someone negligent. I am not a very organized person but I try my best to arrange my ideas. And I have self-discipline it’s just that I have difficulties on obeying them. Meaning I know what to do but can’t find the motivation to do it.
My Extraversion test result is “You tend to shy away from social situations” with 22% average. In this test result I agree but still have slight disagreement. Yes I am shy and don’t like social events but I am friendly and talkative at times. And I don’t like a social event that has strangers as guests, but if the guests are people I know personally then it’s an event I would really hate to miss. I am only shy and silent to people whom I don’t know, but when I feel comfortable with the people around me I am talkative, active and is very participative.
My Agreeableness test result is “You tend to consider the feelings of others” with 74% average. Now this is an accurate result. Yes I know how to consider the feelings of others. I know how to listen to them when they are talking. I know what to say to not offend their feelings. And I try my best to comfort everyone who needs comfort. I personally consider myself a very good friend, because I put my friends feeling as my first priority before mine. I try not to do things that would hurt them emotionally. Before I say or even lay my opinion on their experiences or dilemmas I always think of what would their reaction be if I say it or declare it. And also I will not hesitate to tell my friends the truth even if it would hurt them if it really is necessary to do so.
My Neuroticism test result is “You tend to become anxious or nervous” with 60% average. Well this is another almost accurate result. I am always comparing myself to someone superior to me thus always result to me being someone less than him. And that also result to me being insecure that whatever I am today is not enough and there is nothing I can do to change that. Every time an important task is given to me I always try to reject it at least once for it to be assigned to someone else other than me, but if I have no choice but to accept it I get nervous and immediately think of the worst “what ifs”. But the does not hinder me from doing and finishing the task assigned. And I always worry about the things I don’t know. I think the best example is when exam period ends and the result submission is near I always worry I might have failed my exams or something like that.

Those are the result of my personality traits test. According to the test I failed three out of the five categories of result, but I strongly disagree with it. I believe that the results are accurate because I answered truthfully, but the interpretations of the results are inaccurate. I think breaking the category of results into tinier parts would increase its accuracy. Because its categories are too broad and can still be narrowed. But this was a very interesting test that generated a good not the best but good result.

So again, according to the test I am person who is not creative, narrow minded, insecure, and considers the feeling of others, shy, unreliable and unorganized. In my own interpretation of the result it is simply saying that I don’t have the requirements to be successful but can work well with a group. Also it is saying that I can still change myself or improve what I have and develop what I don’t have in order to be successful in what I want with my life.

Relating it to my subject Techoprenuership the test result contradicts with the result of the test that we took back in our last session in the said subject that resulted that I would be a successful technoprenuer someday. This test says that I don’t have the mind of a technoprenuer, because I don’t have original ideas, I am always insecure, I am afraid of taking risks because I am nervous, I am un reliable, I am unorganized, and most importantly because I am shy. To be a successful technoprenuer one must be innovative and brave to take risks must be organized and dependable or reliable which according to the test I am not. But this does not mean I can’t be a successful technoprenuer someday. As our facilitator said in our class: “failing the test doesn’t mean you don’t have what it takes. It means you still have the time to improve and develop”. And I will try my best to improve the skills and characteristics that I have and would develop those that I don’t have yet. Anyway I am still young at my age I still got plenty of time to prepare for whatever it is that would come to my life.

As long as I still have the dream to be successful and I believe that I can be successful and it would come true then I still have hope. All I need to do is try my best today and prepare myself for tomorrow. And the rest will just follow. ^_^

TECHNOPRENUER: Assignment 1 (Due: July 16, 2010, before 01:00pm)

After watching the movie "Pirates of the Silicon Valley",

1. What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?
2. How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?
3. Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

note: at least 1000 words for every question.....

1. What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?

“I want to put a dent in the universe,” Jobs once said. From a business that had a garage as a headquarters to one of the largest establishment in the world. Leading the world in technological advancement and innovations. What did it take for him to get to the top?

Steve had faith. He didn’t always know what he was doing in life. A college dropout who likes inventing and developing a machine called a computer, many gave up on him and had little faith in his abilities. But, Jobs didn’t give up on himself. He continued pursuing avenues that he found interesting, trusting that in the end it would be more meaningful and even perhaps useful. He soon learned that everything in his life, even the most terrible things, seem to happen for a reason and he is now able to place a certain amount of trust in the uncontrollable.

Steve had passion. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work,” says Jobs. From his first days working at his father’s workbench, Jobs knew that his future lay in the creation of things. It wasn’t until he met Wozniak in 1968 that he knew what those things were – personal computers. Despite failures such as Apple III and being fired from the company he helped found, Jobs managed to come back out on top because he knew that he didn’t want to devote his life to anything but his passion.

Steve thought of innovation. When other CEOs were focusing on sales and financing, Jobs was concerning himself with the next big thing. Personally meeting with suppliers and suppliers’ suppliers, Jobs made it his top priority to keep on top of the next frontier. By filling his company with only the brightest of people, Jobs continues to work towards ensuring Apple a place at the top of the market for years to come. And so it did.

Steve had a good vision. An open mind and the ability to put new twists on old techniques was one of the key distinguishing factors between Jobs and his competitors. From cute and utilitarian ads to those that appealed to counterculture rebellion, Jobs’ vision was integrated into every aspect of the company’s strategy. If you dreamed of changing the world, then Jobs was out to prove any way he could that you needed an Apple computer to do it. His motivation and passion for what he’s doing made it all possible.

From being thought of as a one-hit wonder for his role in founding Apple Computer in the 1970s to rebounding with Pixar and once again rejuvenating Apple, Jobs has time and time again demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity. And, he shows no signs of stepping down any time soon. “I think we’re having fun. I think our customers really like our products. And we’re always trying to do better.”

That was the factors that led him to his success, now these are the factors that contributed to his failures. First is a very common case that when victory is tasted you start to think that you’re some kind of an invulnerable thing that can never be hurt of broken. In steve’s case after his success he aimed to be ahead of everyone by enslaving his workers to work for 90 hours a week. And by out smarting everyone else if necessary just to have what it is that he wanted. Also thinking that he was invulnerable because of all that he has earned he started lower his guard against opportunists like bill gates who instantly took the opportunity that came his way and stole apples information for the development of windows. He also developed a habit of lowering other peoples self-esteem by telling them their not good enough to be in apple. The next factor is that growing up with the knowledge that he was adopted and not knowing who his real parents were he somehow didn’t want the child that her girlfriend claimed to be he’s, but somehow deep inside knew that the child was he’s. the next is that because of his new idea he formed a new team inside his company called Mac and made it compete with the old team who’s working on AppleII. That competition led to fighting and internal feud in his company, but what’s surprising is that Steve never seemed to care what was happening to his employees. Because of that he lost his one true friend Steve Wozniak. And all of those led to him being fired from apple. But in the end he was rehired and got everything back. So in the end all was well for Steve Jobs.

2. How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?

Me as a technopreneur. Well I am into doing business but not today or not yet any way. I would like to finish my tertiary education before planning or entering such environment. But when the time comes I think I would become not as amazing as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates but good enough to compete with the existing enterprises. Because I am packed with the new world knowledge I am well updated with the new world technology.

Here are some characteristics that I think a technoprenuer should have or atleast try to develop…..

Open-minded – a technopreneur should know what ideas are good and what not. Also he should know that a good idea can always be improved. Everything is not at its final. So he should always be open for any changes. He should be open for new ideas that some might even be in contrast to him. He should know that he may be the boss but it doesn’t mean that he has the best ideas so he should always consider someone else’s ideas before making any final decision.

Smart – a technoprenuer should know what is good from bad. And that not all bad ideas should be rejected some can also be altered to be a good one. He should be smart enough not to get scammed. He should be smart enough to make the right decisions as often as possible for the sake of the company.

Good communication skills – a technopreneur should have good communication skills. Clients sometimes don’t know what they want or if they really need what your offering them so a technopreneur should be able to explain everything in a manner that makes clients interested and purchase whatever it is that you are offering. It is always a technopreneurs aim to invite more clients to have more income and good communication skills will help the achieve it.

Determination - a technopremeur can never be successful if he is not determined on what he is doing. It is in his determination where his success lies. If he is not determind on what he is doing he would easily give up when facing an obstacle that he has to pass. And it is determination that keeps you going on when the going gets tough.

Knows how to handle failures – it not always a win in business so a technopreneur should know how to handle failures. Some people gives up after their first failure but remember that even the most successful people have experienced failure at least once in their life. What you should do is look back where you made the mistake and learn from it so as not to happen again. Remember that failures are there for us to learn and there’s no better teacher that experience.

Knows how to handle stress – being a technopreneur you are subjected to work work work and more work so it is expected that you can handle the pressure and stress that comes with it. Some businessmen take a vacation every once in awhile to relieve stress and to get the mind off the work. This will keep you sane while having a career that’s driving you insane.

Willing to take risk – the most important aspect that a technopreneur should have is the willingness to take risks. It is in risk taking that the greatest success will come from so if you wanted to succeed then be prepared to take a lot of risk. Some risk might even put the whole company in a dangerous situation. But the success that comes along after it is always worth it.

Well those are the characteristics that a technopreneur I think should have. And luckily for me, I happen to have the ability to adjust to what is necessary. So being a technopreneur for me will not be easy but it won’t be something impossible. That is why I see myself having a large successful business placed in the cutting edge of the industry being envied by those who were unable to be where I am.

3. Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

Yes. The career he took was a career that has the ability to not only help the improvements of the world but also it can change the worldl. Being a n amazing technopreneur is an amazing career to take. Let me cite reasons why.

First is leading the world of innovation and technological advancement is IT’s first and primary goal. IT is not just a path that lands you to a career that places you behind a table with a computer. It has different paths that lead to different career like a computer programmer, a software developer, a database manager, a data security expert and even a businessman who does business in a technological manner. Just as what Steve Jobs did. He was a Harvard student who traded his education for a chance to invent something that is way ahead of everyone in terms of innovation. He created a computer for everyone that now is a must have gadget at every home.

Second is almost every house hold nowadays has a computer if not has something that is related to the technology. So developing and improving these existing technologies and then putting into a business is not a bad idea. In fact it is a great idea. It could be a chance to be in the cutting edge of technological advancement. And it does not require a large amount of money only a working mind, a good idea and most importantly motivation to do all that it takes to succeed.

Third is well this is a business inclined career so income will definitely be in terms of large amounts. If in luck you are successful then you will surely become a millionaire.

Fourth and most importantly is entering the world of business you are providing innovations, improvements and other stuffs to the community. Thus when success comes your way you will have to extend your company when it gets larger, this will require you to hire more people to work for you and that will lead to the decrease of unemployment rate to your local location. And further success and extensions if ever you get really lucky you might even want to place branches in the different parts of the Philippines. So now you’re not only helping your self but also your country and country men who doesn’t have a work. You provide work, salary and you are close to your family. You no longer need to go out of the country just to earn a large amount of money.

Those are the reasons that I have thought of why I want to take the same career path as Steve jobs. Some professionals have a problem of which path to take, weather to go to a career building job or to a high earning one. Well be a technopreneur and have both good career that you can boast to everyone while earning as much as millions if you get lucky and succeed. And most of the successful persons are the businessmen who knows how to take risks just to be on top of everyone.

hope this is enough........................ done..............
